Having clean water is something that we all strive for. Without realizing it, your drinking could have contaminants, such as lead, floating around. Luckily, there are water filters that remove lead. These filters are widely accessible and can offer you great tasting water at your home source.

What’s Wrong With Lead?

In 2014, The Flint water crisis showed the reality of our public water. Studies found that 100,000 citizens have high levels of lead from their water sources. Studies show that children exposed to high levels of lead can have permanent learning and behavioral problems through their lifespan. The lead contamination in our water pipes will have lasting effects for decades.

While we can’t always solve how the lead got in the water, you have the ability to make sure that the lead never enters your body through a water filter. Here’s a recommended list of water filters that remove lead, both pitchers and tap water attachments.

What Is A Carbon Filter?

The filters below are all using activated carbon filters.  These filters are fine grains of carbon, with less surface area for the water to go through. The grains help develop flow channels so water can bypass the filter.

Brita Monterey

Quick Facts:

  • Filter Life: 120 gallons, averaging six months

The Brita Monterey water pitcher is a great option for water filters that remove lead. This pitcher is BPA free and uses an activated carbon filter. It has a capacity of 10 cups and can fill three 24 ounce water bottles. Switching to this water filter can save 900 disposable bottles per filter. Therefore, if you have this pitcher for one full year and made two filter switches, you have saved 1,800 bottles.

This filter removes more than just lead. This water filter also reduces 99% of:

  • Chlorine
  • Mercury
  • Benzene
  • Asbestos

This is available through Brita’s website, Target, Walmart, or Amazon.

Brita Complete Faucet Mount System

Quick Facts:

  • Filter Life: 200 gallons, averaging one month

The Brita Complete Faucet Mount System comes with two filters, giving you 200 gallons of water before needing to buy a replacement filter. This activated carbon filter attaches right to the faucet and has three spray options. This also has an indicator light to let you know when the filter needs to be changed. This way, you’re never drinking unfiltered water.

To make sure that your filter is working properly, you need to flush water through the filter for five minutes. The water activates the filter and removes carbon dust from the filter. This does not add to the 100 gallon life capacity, as the filter does not work properly until it has been flushed with water for five minutes.

This is available through Brita’s website, Target, Walmart, or Amazon.

PUR Water Pitcher

Quick Facts:

  • Filter Life: 40 gallons, averaging two months

The PUR Water Pitcher has a large capacity at 11 cups (roughly 90 ounces). The activated carbon filters last for two months, or 40 gallons, and there is an LED indicator light to let you know when it needs to be replaced. That way, you can always keep your water clean and lead-free.

Other than lead, this filter also removes 96% of Mercury, 95% industrial pollutants, and 94% of pharmaceuticals found in water. The pitcher is BPA free.

The PUR Water Pitcher can be found at Amazon, Costco, Target or Walmart.

Waterdrop Water Faucet Filter

Quick Facts:

  • Filter Life: 320 gallons, averaging three months

The Waterdrop Water Faucet Filter has a 320 gallon life, which is two times longer than most faucet attachments. This activated carbon filter works with a .5 micron activated carbon filter, which removes lead, chlorine, taste/odors, sediments, rust and water impurities.

Replacement filters come in at 22.99/three, giving you 12 months (or 1,280 gallons of water) for under $45. This filter works with standard faucets, but not pull out, hand held, spray style or faucets with sensors. The filter can withstand water temperatures between 41 to 122 degrees fahrenheit. If this is put on a faucet that is not used everyday, make sure to run the water for 30 seconds before using it to reactivate the filter.

This filter can be found on their website,  Amazon, and Walmart.

Clearly Filtered Water Pitcher

Quick Facts:

  • Filter Life: 100 gallons, averaging four months

The Clearly Filtered Water Pitcher comes in at the most expensive price of the five, but has the capabilities to filter more chemicals than the others. The filter goes through activated carbon and then flows through a composite shell. This shell is 7+ filtration layers. This is a dense process to slow the rate of water and make sure that it has significant time to remove contaminants. This filter can remove 99.7% of 232+ harmful and dangerous chemicals and contaminants. This includes:

  • Lead
  • Fluoride
  • Glyphosate
  • PFOA
  • Hormones
  • Microplastics

The Clearly Filtered Water Pitcher’s performance data can give you a full, in-depth look at what contaminants are removed.

This filter does retain the natural minerals and nutrients that are in your water. This pitcher can hold 80 ounces of water, and the filter needs to be replaced every four months or 100 gallons.

The Clearly Filtered Water Pitcher can be purchased through their website, or on Amazon.
