How Does a Solar Power Bank Work?
Think of a solar power bank as a portable solar panel. Throughout the day, keep the solar power bank exposed so it can collect energy through solar rays. The energy that has been gathered will be stored in the solar power bank. This way, when you’re needing to charge your phone, camera, or other valuable electronics, the power bank is ready to be used.
How Many Times Will It Charge A Device?
The amount of full charges that the solar power bank can have depends on the capacity. The capacity is measured by milliampere hours (mAh). The larger mAh, the longer the solar power bank can operate without needing to be recharged. There are three different sizes:
- Small power banks have a capacity of or around 1,000 mAh.
- Medium size power banks have a capacity between 3,000 and 5,000 mAh
- Large bank units have a capacity of 10,000 to 30,000 mAh
For reference, a smartphone has a battery of 3,000 mAh. Therefore, a medium sized power bank can charge it fully one time, and a large power bank can charge it three to ten times.
Of course, there are sizes larger than 30,000 mAh, but those aren’t as easily portable given the fact that they have multiple panels.
How Long Does It Take For the Sun to Charge the Bank?
The charge time depends on two factors: the type of battery and amount of solar panels. There are two different types of batteries: 1A and 2A. The basic models have 1A, while the more advanced have 2A.
The Phoenix Sun outlined a table that allows for easier understanding of charge time for your solar power bank.
- A 5,000 mAh will need one solar panel, and six hours to fully charge.
- 10,000 mAh needs two solar panels and 12 hours to fully charge.
- 25,000 mAh needs five solar panels and 30 hours to fully charge.
- 30,000 mAh needs six solar panels and 36 hours to fully charge.
- 50,000 mAh will require 10 solar panels and 60 hours to fully charge.
- 75,000 mAh requires 15 solar panels and 90 hours to fully charge.
- 90,000 mAh power banks require 18 solar panels and 108 hours to fully charge.
What Improvements Do Solar Power Banks Give?
Helpful For the Environment, Free Energy For Your Budget
It may seem obvious to talk about how solar power banks are helpful for the environment- but it’s too important to overlook. Using solar panels is a clean form of renewable energy, and that is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. If you’re someone who needs multiple devices charged, living in a sunny area, you have every reason to make an investment towards solar power banks. You don’t have to live off-the-grid to take advantage of this, this is a product meant for everyone and every lifestyle.
Once the solar power bank has been purchased, there is no other expense. This doesn’t add onto growing electricity bills, or require any maintenance. Once you go solar, you won’t go back.
Use Solar Power Anywhere, Off the Grid, On the Go, In Your Home
If you’re a big traveler, this one’s for you. This allows you to charge your devices from anywhere in the world, as long as you can get sunlight to charge it. Charging your phone on travel days can be problematic, and having a dead phone in an unknown area is unsafe. A great alternative to this is the portable power bank.
For flying with solar power banks, make sure that you keep it in your carry-on only. These should not be put in checked luggage for flights. Larger solar power banks need to be cleared by the airline before flying, so make sure that you double check before potentially not being able to travel with this item.
Wide Range of Options
There are different sizes and battery life options with solar power banks. If you’re looking for a smaller one and not spending too much money- there are plenty of options for you. There are different specifications that each solar power bank model can have.
Some solar power banks with one USB port, two USB ports, and multiple. There are solar power banks with LED flashlights and some that can warm your hands. If you’re someone who likes to camp or hike and looking for a great portable power bank, check out our list to find out the must-haves.
